8 pre's and a control surface---Firepod vs. . Tascam fw-1884

Hi guys, I'm new here.

I'm to the point where I need to upgrade from Garageband using a used MBox with no Pro Tools---into something a tiny little bit higher end.

I need more XLR inputs for full band recording. At least 8. I'm definitely on a budget.
I'm not using Pro Tools, because it's just too expensive and limiting in the 4 input, 32 track max Digi LE setup.

Control surface help

i have decided to buy a control surface, but don't know which one to get. the Mackie univeral looks good, but is really expensive for 8 channels. Im lookin for maybe 24 channels? but if not, i can work with 8...anything is better than a mouse, right? i was suggested to get the Tascam w/ an interface (I'm not sure of the number). can i use that with my 2 firepods?

Control Surfaces

I'm looking to improve my mixing environment by purchasing a control surface (or maybe a mixer) that will interface with my sequencing software (Cubase & Ableton Live) in such a way that I’d be able control track levels, panning, muting/soling, and so forth from the hardware instead of using only the keyboard and mouse.

Mixer as control surface?

Hi.

I was just wondering if those cheaper firewire mixers can act as a control surface at all.

For example, Phonic has a Firewire series of mixers called Helixboard.

Are any mixers like that able to be used for post recording editing?.

Im planning on getting a mixer for general uses and for live applications and what not.

Thanks.
