My ADA interface is an E-MU 0404 PCI card:

Which then go to my studio monitor and headphone mixes.

I'm using a pair of Sennheiser HD280 Pro Closed-Back Headphones and what I'm experiencing is after finding mic placement/settings and levels for all instruments (inc. guitars, bass, drums, even vocals) is a great quality sound through the phones, however upon listening to the same thing through speakers, sounds very different, and quite frankly, a lot worse.

ok so for some reason i cannot hear live or playback signal coming into the headphones BUT i when i push the talkback button on my O2R i can hear talkbalk just fine. any idea's of what may be causing this?

I've been looking around at reasonably affordable studio headphones. One's such as the Beyerdynamic DT 990's, AKG's K271 & 171 and I would love to know which would be the best buy for use in mixing & editing situations. I know that ideally monitors should be used but for the work I'm doing headphones are necessary.
So, any suggestions?

I'm not happy with them, I bought them because they are closed. I need closed headphones for tracking and mix downs since I can't always use my monitors if I want to work later at night.

I'm in a situation where I have to mix on headphones.

The good news is that I have access to Grado GS1000's.

My question is this.

The D/A that I'm using is a Lucid DA9624. I'm wondering how much WORSE this is compared to a dedicated headphone amp like the Grace m902.

this is the 2ed pair of Sennheiser HD280 Pro headphones that i've worn out this year
after a month or two they lose their clarity
6 months, the transients are distorting all the time, it's gross

I have a small home studio and just want to get an opinion on mixing using headphones vs monitors. Good idea / Bad idea? Please let me know.
