FAQ

SDC Explained

SDC's by nature exhibit a faster transient response, as well as better stereo imaging and capturing of low frequencies.

LDC Explained

LDC's are slower to respond, due to the added mass of the capsule, comparatively speaking, and have a tendency to color sound more so than an SDC.

ribbon or multi pattern LDC?

Hello all,

I'm looking to expand my capabilities by getting a multi pattern mic, and am leaning toward either an AT 4050, which I can get for $700, or a Royer r-101 which will run me $800. Because of their construction, they're different animals, so I want to get some opinions on which direction to head.

LDC

Large Diaphragm Condenser: LDCs have become something of a commodity in recent years, ranging in price from $10,000 at the high end all the way down to sturdy and functional LDCs costing less than $100. I feel like I do pretty well with my dynamics or the K2 for male vocals, but I'd like something more "elegant" for female vocals.

RODE LDCs: NT2A vs NT1A vs NT1000

It will be used mainly for vocals - male and female - so it will have to be quite versatile. It would be great if I could use it for other sources as well though (acoustic guitar, toms, strings).

Looking to buy my first decent LDC

As the topic title says, I'm in the market for a new LDC. I'm looking to spend no more than $300. Right now my only LDC is a MXL 2001. I plan on using it primarily as a vocal mic, but it would be nice if I could get away with using it for horns (trumpet, sax, clarinet) as well. I've been looking at the following mics:
