How many of you guys use a stereo expander to obtain more clarity in mastering . and if you don't what other methods you use to clear up the two track stereo mix?

Okay in this climate of every man and his dog having some Waves plugins running under Wavelab or whatever, what are the DO's and DONT'S if mixes are going to be sent out to a mastering house?

a) has anyone already tested CRane song Plugins?
b) what about Waves Linear Phase Bundle? Is it a big leap from Q10 and L1 + ( which I hate)?
c) What are the main differences between MC2000, TC MASTER X and C4?
I use Q10, L1+, Master X, Power dither.
d) What else is suitable for junior mastering within PT TDM world? GM, Sony stuff?

Hi everyone,

I Left a post in the mastering section tell those guys " mastering is Overated"... and that it's only a song .., I can just imagine what theyre really saying (aside from the sarcasm). Why I did it ?

First I must say much respect to all the great mastering engineers on this site. Today's music no longer needs that fine detailed nuances that major labels strived for in the past . And to top it off, if your music is too polished and pristine (in rap or R&B) it gets labeled as not being grimy enough.

I know absolutely nothing about mastering, except what I've learned by dropping by here. Could someone please take the time to tell me what a Mastering Engineer might have in his room that a recording studio would not have, and what a recording studio might have that a Mastering Engineer would not need? In other words, what's in your tool cabinet?

hey there bill and other masters, i read in one of the post in critique you mentioned about the artist providing a 2 mix with instruments and 2 mix with vocals. .why? i can kind of think why you might do that for control of vocal placement or eq/compression but could you be specific...or is this a trade secret and you would have to expose of my body? thanks mark
