I realize that many of us with small tracking facillities can't get necessarily get something like the Dunleaveys (sp?), for mastering but I would like to know what you mastering experts consider the criteria for your monitors and what your choices might be.

I know the importance of mastering by a mastering engineer. But trying to tell most of my clients this is like speaking to them in Latin. My mastering guy has given me some good things to say that helps, but most of them really don't get it, all they hear is what it cost and all things considered it's pretty cheap. They see the Finalizer and Masterlink and say won't that do?

is it worth investing in a 1/2" instead of a 1/4" for mastering(big quality difference)?

also, which brands have most of you liked most? I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to tape machines.

I prefer to have my mixes mastered by a professional mastering house because I don't have the tools and monitor set up to get proper results.

Got it together to be able to read the CD's? Every attempt to ask this question at trade fairs has resulted in a piss poor 'shoulder shrug' from the guys that build both mastering systems. Assholes.

Great forum idea! Let me begin by saying that after reading through the other posts, I’m thrilled that there are those of you out there who are willing to share your knowledge and kick this forum off. My many thanks in advanced.

Now then, here are a couple of questions for the gurus out there:

a friend of mine recorded a project for a band and they took it to get professionally mastered at Freq Mastering. Everything on the mastered copy sounded more present, it was subtle like you couldn't hear EQing or compression it was just that every instrument found their place. Is this presence achieved by just running things through really nice analog outboard gear?
