mastering compressor

Anyone have a suggestion or recommendation for a good stereo mastering compressor. I'm a HS music teacher that makes lots of tapes of choral performances and also a number of backround tapes for vocal cabaret performances. I know things like the Manley Vari-mu is quite often recommended for this but is there something a little cheaper, if possible.

Hack Mastering

I am a musician just getting started tracking and mixing in Sonar 2.2.

Once I have songs ready I intend on doing one of two things based on my success:

1. Take tracks to pro studio and get help mixing down and mastering (not first choice.)

2. Mixing tracks down and taking to pro studio for mastering (this IS my first choice.)

So here are my questions:

Mastering prices

Well, here's the situation. I'm doing a home studio recording. Nothing too fancy. But still going to be about 15+ tracks. Something I can look back on in 10 years and go... cool. I'm trying to be adaquitely prepared for mastering down the road later this year. I'm looking for reasonable work and reasonable prices, since I'm not a pro musician going out to make money off this... yet.
