I've got one input left on my Firepod to record drums. Found a good sounding room and would like to have a stereo room track.

I have a ribbon that picks up Figure-8 nicely. I've used this ribbon for M/S with an SM57 as mid, and it works nicely after EQ tweaking.

I know I can "try things out" when I get there, but I'd like to be better prepared mentally.

So, I sometimes use the SIR1 plugin for reverb (its free!). It takes impulse responses of different locations around the world to simulate reverb. You can even make your own, which I did. I took a pair of SDC's and recorded them in XY inside a giant staircase in my school. It sounds pretty cool.

when recording acoustic guitars (or other instuments!) using MS technique Im getting mixed results in respect of the balancing of the S channels.

We use good mics, AKG 414 / U87i etc and are dong it through decent analog desk (Soundcraft ghost), but get strange things when balancing for mix.

I have a question about M/S mic technique. I really like it, but why does the left channel get louder when I raise the volume of the "M" mic panned center against the "S" mic channels? The Left and right channel was created in my DAW by cloning a track from the S mic, then flipping the right channel out of phase and hard panning both channels hard L and R.

Recently I bought a new device, the H4n and I turned on the M/S Matrix feature. I did not know it applied to the XLR inputs so I M/S Matrixed a source that was already perfect stereo. I know there is a way through inversion and all sorts of other stuff to create an M/S mix after the fact. Is there any wya to undo an M/S mix to get the original stuff back?
