Software effect on plugin performance

I am in the process of crossgrading from Sonar to Samplitude 7.xx. I hear good things about the 'sound ' of Samplitude and was: 1.] wondering what peoples opinions are regarding percieved differences in sound quality from one audio software to another, and 2.] do the algorythms in the audio software affect the quality of sound produced by plugin fx?

star quad cables?

I was reading an article about Micing choirs and the writer advised that normal 3 prong XLR cables were insufficient for live recordings due to length of run and height of microphones. The danger was picking up radio broadcasts with suspended or elevated mics. He advised that only star quad cables be used - 4 conductors plus a braided shield.

Quality Plugins

What's some of your opinions about the quality of some pluginsthat come packaged with your host software. The reason I asked is because I have tried a few of these and was surprised when I'd A/B them for use on a audio track. The quality of the pluginsthat came with the program was less appealing than the ones that I paid for. Has this been the case with some other programs?

UAD Fairchild 670

Well being that I'm a Pro Tools HD user I'm not going to see that plug untill its released as the TDM version, so has anyone used this for the UAD, really anxious to hear how it sounds or perhaps even a short audio clip of a processed and unprocesed clip. Also another on the waiting list. have anyone used the cambridge
EQ yet any comments on it?

Best Platform/Plugins

I know most of you in here use Pro-Tools. But what other platforms are comparable, if any? And what DSP pluginsare the best?
Ive recently looked into Creamware, TC Powercore, and Logic products. The possibilities seem endless.
So I put it to you all, the, "big boys."
I love this site and must say I'm addicted.
Any and all feedback is appreciated.
