does more RAM = more plugins?

I'm runnin an old dual 450 (512 ram) on OS X.2 . with a digi 002 rack. i love it so much..best resuts..but i can only have so many plugins without it telling me to increase the buffer size. which is allready maxed.
i run on average 12-15 tracks with about 2 or 3 plugs on each..jst compressors and 4 band eq's..
i also have 2 vocal tracks with auto tune

Please educate me about. . . Plugins

What are they? My gut inkiling is that they are software patches that add functionality to audio/MIDI programs like Cubase, Cakewalk, etc. Is this correct?

Currently I'm using Cubase VST Score 5.0. The VST stands for Virtual Studio Technology, which leads me to believe there are a bunch of pluginsfloating around out there that would turn my Mac into a "virtual studio."
