Description

A preamplifier, also known as a preamp, is an electronic amplifier that converts a weak electrical signal into an output signal strong enough to be noise-tolerant and strong enough for further processing, or for sending to a power amplifier and a loudspeaker. Without this, the final signal would be noisy or distorted.

Is it better to have 2 or more different mic preamps?

Forums

Wondering if I need to purchase 2-2 channel mic preamps or 1-4 channel. I am looking at the Sebatron VMP 2000e and RNP (or similar) or the Seb VMP 4000e. I did not know if recording all tracks on the Seb would create any problems, frquency wise. I have read that using a Neve 1073, for example, for all tracking can create some build up of certain frequencies that may not be desirable.

Mic Preamps?

Forums

Hey everybody, i had a question. When your talking about Mic pre's, what is that exactly. When I recorded, i took my mic and just plugged it into my Roland VS -1880, and used the on-board effects. Can someone explain to me the signal chain? Are mic preamps' like compressors and stuff tha you plug the mic into and then plug it into the studio? Thanks

Matching mics with mic preamps

Forums

I've been wondering this for awhile. Everyone's ideal studio, from what I've been reading on this board, would include at least 6-10 different mics and 3-5 different mic preamps (probably the more, the better). How do you know which mic/mic preamp combination works best for a given singer? Surely you wouldn't have that singer try every mic/mic preamp combination.

Preamps for under 1k

Hey guys/gals. I have a modest home studio and I'm looking to get a good solid-state pre for around 1k. I own a hhb radius 40 and a 50 (both tube) and a Joemeek vc6, but I'd like something better. The hhbs are ok on most stuff, but when recording 'heavier' guitars (which I do a lot) they are way to bright and brittle. I've had people tell me to look into Summit, Grace, FMR, etc.

Mic Preamps on Mackie 1604 VLZPro

Forums

I hope this isn't too dumb of a question, but before I go out and spend a bunch on the PreSonus or Sebatron , I figured I would ask it.

Right now I'm using a Mackie 1604 VLZPro mixer and going into a MOTU 2408. Mackie says the the VLZPro has great mic preamps on each channel.

Are those sufficient? Hype? Still need the 8 in mic preamp?

Thanks!

Mic preamps: I need a push

Forums

While I am still very curious to hear Kurt's report on the Sebatron pre, I feel myself moving towards a mic preamp purchase in the next couple days (that refund check is burning a hole in my pocket). The problem is, I'm waffling between two pretty different units. This pre will be my go-to unit. What I'm down to are the Langevin DVC and the Great Rivers 2NV.
