preamp
i am using an at2020 running it from the art tube OPL preamp, into a Behringer 802 xenyx, would both preamps be necessary for maximum clarity on vocals or is it overkill, the vocals are loud rock/rap segments over prerecorded instrumentals

Retube or Rent High Quality Preamp?
Hi all so I have a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier that I got used off of craigslist and I haven't yet swapped out the tubes. I think that they're between 2-3 years old (they are groove tubes if it matters). I'm going to be recording a new record soon and I'm wondering if it would be better to do a full retube or spend my money on a renting a high quality preamp such as an Avalon 737.

preamp question
i have a Behringer eurorack mixer that i have to use as a preamp for recording vocals
the reason i use it is because i had it for my PA, and i cant afford to buy anything else right now really
the only way i can afford to interface with my computer is to go out of the two rca plugs on the tape out of my mixer into my soundcard

How much difference does a great preamp REALLY make?
So it's about that time for me to start looking into the next big studio upgrade. I want a great preamp (mainly for vocals and distorted guitar) and a distressor.
Mic preamps
What is the advantage of using expensive microphone preamps if ultimately, the output is going to go through the pre-amp circuitry of a mixer channel anyway?
Thanks :?

Mic preamp damage (PreSonus FP10)?
I did a very stupid thing with my PreSonus FP10. I was getting low recording levels on the drums, so I've changed a mic cable on one of the mic inputs from XLR-1/4 to XLR-XLR to check if the recording levels would improve. Of course I was stupid enough to keep the gain level on this channel almost to the max.

Newb question...can mic preamps be used as a/d converters?
Hi. Just wondering, I saw this in another thread:
{old-link-removed}
This guy said this:
"I doubt you'll ever get a better A/D converter than what's in the API. It's about as good as they get.
Just a thought.
J"
Does that mean I don't need d/a converters when running mics through, say, an API 3124?
digimax fs or single preamp?
I have a firepod at the moment (soon to be profire 2626) and i was thinking of getting 2 preamps with an eq and compressor built into them- the PreSonus eureka and Joemeek 6Q- and connecting them via spdif.
But they would be around 500 euro each. Would it be a better idea to get a digimax fs and have 8 preamps via ADAT then add external hardware to the inserts down the line.

Electric guitar-Recording direct via preamp?
Hello, this is my first post here. I decided to join to learn more about recording. I am an enthusiastic beginner, but limited in resources and experience, so I hope others will tolerate my questions which are apt to be basic. I just read Mastering Audio by Katz, and am almost finished Behind the Glass. Both were good reads, and I think I learned something from the simpler parts.
