I don't get how preamps work with snakes

I'm mostly a recording guy, but I do the odd live sound gig. I've done a couple now with analog snakes that split the signals to both the FOH booth, and the monitor console. But I don't get how those work, in terms of preamps to microphones? Are there are two gain knobs controlling two preamps to one mic? How is that possible?

Structured Home Wiring (Permanent Snake?)

Hi,

I dunno if this is the right forum, but basically, I'm looking to make some 'snakes' that I want to use in my home. Like most middle-aged musicians and serial killers, I live alone. I pretty much record in every room. So what I end up doing is dragging long XLR cables all over the place.

Bulk Snake Cable Recommendations?

Lots of discussion of brands of basic mic cable in the archives, but I can't find any discussion of preferred brands of snake cable. Hardware recommendations would also be a help. I'm looking into making a 24 channel fan to breakout box, and maybe a couple of xlrf-xlrm subsnakes. I'd appreciate any help with brands and suppliers.

Help! Groove Tubes 6TM Power Supply cable Pin out schematic/ ADAT Elco to 1/4" snaKes

I have an old Groove Tubes 6TM mic with the PS1 Vacuum tube power supply. The mic end looks like the Groove Tubes EC7 cable in that it has a 7-pin connector. The power supply end looks like an 9-pin ADAT sync connector almost like a vga computer display connector. I am in need of the pin out configuration so that I can build one or a source to purchase one.

Snake

For audio purposes, snake refers to a type of cabling, where multiple lines are enclosed in a larger single shield. The most common use for a snake is for live sound, where microphone leads and monitor mixes are sent back and forth between the front of house mixer and the stage. Obviously it is easier to lay a single 16 or 24 channel snake than to lay each individual line.
