Getting sounds to appear in mix as if in their own 'space'
Hi all,
My first post here! javascript:emoticon(':D')
In many mixes I hear, some sounds - vocals, guitars etc. - often appear to be in "their own space". Hard to describe, but it's as if they have had their eq 'scooped out' - and as tho they have their own acoustic space.
Drive space reserve precautions
:D Howdy, One of our post guys had a huge amount of AV high res files on his mac for a given project. He wanted more drives installed. Not getting into specifics of the OS level and cards etc., this is what happened when his installer popped in the new drives.

Best preamp/mic combo for recording outer space?
I'm working on a classified project for NASA to evaluate the possibility of detecting, remotely, whether it is possible to detect, the sound of a tree falling in a forest on earth from outer space. The classified orbital height will be 262,000 miles, embedded in a classified location on a large orbital body code-named "luna" (don't tell anybody!).
Hard Disk Space
:?:
The other day I was visiting a studio and I noticed that the PT session was synced to the analog tape, but the SMTE number was many minutes past 0:00:00. The guy at the studio did not use any SMPTE offset. My question is this: If the session starts at 0:00:00 is he wasting a bunch of disk space by running his sessions in that way?

Acoustic Space
Maybe this topic has been beaten like the proverbial dead horse, but I'm a new kid on this particular block...so, I could really use some help.

Creating space in your mixes
This is a re-post of an article that appeared on Harvey's forum. I'm putting it on my board for easy access.
When mixing in stereo, there are 5 planes of spatial illusion. Level, panning, frequency, spatial perception, and contrast. These five planes are all used to create space in a mix.

space: given or taken away?
Usually we hear that spcae is added to a mix by taking things out or away. Yet i hear of people actually creating space by adding or modifying elements of a mix, how can this be, are there frequencies that, when added, create space?
