I recently got a laptop, and was horrified when I tried recording for the first time. I am simply plugging into the mic jack on the front, and no matter what I have plugged in be it a microphone or guitar there is a terrible static. It starts with a loud pop at the beginning of the recording, and persists as very noisy static throughout.

OK. Well I searched all the way back to 2006 and didn't find something which would point me in the right direction so here goes...

Just modded old 16ch Soundcraft Spirit Studio board to +4 from -10. Now the static (which has always been there) has increased. Here's what's been done up to this point:

I have a pair of active monitors and they are going directly into my RME fireface 400. But for some reason Im getting heavy static when I turn them on. They are the only speakers going into my Fireface 400 and they are the only speakers with this issue. Heres the weird part though.

I just got the M-Audio Firewire Solo box today and it works great on my desktop but on my laptop while the laptop is plugged in it gives off this noise/static. I think it might be a ground loop isolation problem and i have a ground loop isolator from Radioshack but its for RCA connections. I'm thinking I might need a power conditioner. Any ideas?

I've just bought a Sony Condenser Mic.

I've been trying to record vocals by connecting the mic directly to the mic port on my computer. This works, although I'm getting static in the background through the recording.

I'm pretty sure this is due to the connection to the computer being of low quality, although I'm completely new to this, and just guessing that is the case.

I've got a lovely sounding vmp-4000e pre, but have lately discovered a low volume intermittent static coming from channel 2 and some hum in channel 3. Channels 1 & 4 sound clear. I have only just put in an email to Seb, but wondering if anyone else has encountered this in a preamp and what it could indicate?
