hey, i'm currently looking to upgrade to a better studio. After talking to a few people i know I think i want to go with Protools, Blue baby bottle mic, and either a PreSonus eureka or joemeek vc6q mic preamp/compressor.

Being that I would be using an external preamp I am assuming that the Mbox essentially only serves as an interface between the PC and audio equipment. If this is the case would the MBox 2 mini work just as well as the MBox 2 for my purposes? Would there be any benefit for me to get the MBox 2 even though I won't be using it as a preamp? I'm just trying to save a few bucks.

Thanks in advance.

I have the mBox2 (the new one with the cool handle) on the side, just to get to know PT(LE). It is OK, but nothing spectacular. If that's the only thing you got, you are limited to 2 inputs (and perhaps 2 more via spdif).

Since you cannot aggregate devices like these it is best you consider how many inputs you really need. Tracking a band is a little difficult and limited with 2-4 inputs.

You can also look for a 2nd hand PT setup like the Digi001 for less than the mBox, but with more inputs, it won't cost more than a brand new mBox2.

If you do not need more than two inputs, you can even look for a used mBox 1 with the Focusrite pres, which sound a little better than those on the mBox2.

Trying to save some bucks for you. 8)
