Which one is better?
They both connect with a PCI card.
The 192 has 12 mic preamps. ($1800)
The 24I/O has 24 inputs, but are all 1/4" inputs. ($1400)
Would it be better to get the 192 or get the 24I/O with a standalone rack set of mic preamps (for about $400-$600)?
I need 12 mic preamps, but I would like to know the difference between these two. i.e. if the 192 has better preamps than I can get for $600? if the 24I/O has a better inferface and A/D/A converters than the 192? etc.

From my understanding the HD192 has much better conversion. Comparable to Pro Tools HD level, but Zemlin is correct in that it doesn't have mic pres. In acuality neither has mic pres(no phantom power). Your going to need some form of preamplification either way if I'm correct.
I actually have the 2408MKIII and really dig it, and I'm looking to possibly add an HD192 or the digi I/O for our Focusrite ISA428.
Either way in my opion and depending on your needs and current setup, the HD192 will put you in a really good place conversion wise...
Respect!
