got a budget of $1000-$2000 CDN
Most bands will be recorded in bars and isolating the kit in most cases is a R-PITA so in one sense the tighter the pattern the better
Any and all suggestions more than welcome including isolating the kit DIY style if possible

The tightest pattern condensor I know for drum overheads would be the AKG C430. They are not a fantastic mic, but the main problems I had with them was their poor off-axis response (a plus for live situations), and their higher-than-most self noise (also not a problem in live situations.
I'd sell ya mine, but I'm thinking about holding on to them for maybe highhat duty or if I ever need some at a live venue.

I think DaveDog's suggestion on the 451's is pretty good. I'd like to know if your putting thes OH mics through the PA. The plexi-shield could cause unwanted reflections and feedback problems in really small clubs YMMV. But it's hard to go wrong with the 451's (which are also a great all around mic)If you've got a budget of $1,000 to $2,000 CDN you could look into getting 4 or so Shure SM81's. You would then be able to mic things a little closer. A lot of people think of SM81's as a standard of OH's and they don't sound bad up close on a cymbal. However the more mics you add the more phase issues you could add. The SM81's are also good all around mics.
