what do you guys think about using a home stereo for monitors?
I'm broke as hell so I can't afford monitors, what should I do?
any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

Use what you have for now. One thing you can do is try to set your current system to more of a "reference" setting. Get rid of the consumer bass boost and high frequency sizzle if possible. Your music will probably sound a bit boring for a while, but if you are accustomed to the consumer "smile EQ" sound, you will need to adjust to a more realistic/reference sounding set of speakers at some point. Took me 10 years to shake off my old car stereo habits from my teens! And I still have a lot of "listening" to do...
But it sure did feel good to have eight 18" subs shakin' your rump back in High School  (seriously! :? ). Those 15-30 Hz signals never felt so good.

Speaker Placement can also do amazing things - even with mediocre speakers. Try a few different set ups. Also, make sure you are in the sweet spot when mixing, or "critical listening".

A descent set of monitors is positively a good idea, but save your cashews and get a half way descent pair. There are tons of budget Monitor threads right here - just do a search.

You can make descent mixes on a home stereo assuming you are VERY familiar with its charachter and room interaction (and if it doesn't totally suck). Just mix it to sound like your favorite CD played through the same system. ( a lot harder than it sounds )

All I got

I'm starting the same thing at home. I'm going to be investing a signficant amount of $ into room treatment to get the system dialed in. The 1st set of mixes I did at home was big time better than what I did on the same material (jazz recording) at the radio station studio (crappy equipment, monitors, and room.)

I'll never go back.
