audix mics

I own an Audix 0m7, and the DP4 drum pack. I was just comparing them to one another last night. I also tryed to SM57 against the Audix and also use some other mics. But to stay on the subject. I really like the Audix mic's, however I have never tryed any of the spin off models.

Audix I'm a fan of too, but I really need feedback on those models as I can't find them locally to test. So you like the om7? Can you elaborate on that?

and how did the OM come out alongside the 57 IYO (in your opinion)?

Yeah, I really like the Audix. It really sounds good on my voice, I tryed (bought and returned) several different mic's cost rainging from $19 to $49. None of those mic were worth a damn in my opinion. So I started looking for better mic's in the $89 to $200 range.
Thats when I started looking at the Audix, but because I had already spent so much time trying cheaper mics, I just looked past the Fusion series, and started trying the OM series.
Wow! They were much better sounding. So, I bought one. I think I paid $169 for it. But It sounds soooooooooooo different from the Shure 57's and the 58's. And that is just what I wanted.
When I did the test 2 nights ago, I had just gotten my new pre amp in from "Little dog audio" , it is a Great River 2 channel pre. It was the perfect tool for a real check on the different sounds that I now would to be able to record with.
The results........
Audix OM7 sounded thin (compared to the others) and in your face, not a lot of bass and very dreamy like (almost like hearing a soft voice awake you from an afternoon power nap)
Shure SM57 sounded completly different than the Audix but it did sound more like "me" (not the soft voice)
Shure SM58 was really bassy, and was a bigger sound than the other perviously mentioned mic's (still sounds good, but sounded way, way different than the Audix mic's)
I also read a post on here that the Audix D6 was really nice on male vocals, so I tryed that mic along side of the others....

It really sounded cool.
The Audix D6 was smooth, real smooth. And had a sound all it's own. I would definitly suggest purchasing a D6 if you are going to record drums, or even a AKG D112. Then you could also use it for vocals.
An Audix D6 goes for around $200 new, and you can also get the AKG D112 new or on ebay for under $200. They are both great buys, and you will not be dissapionted. Plus it's always good to buy mic's that sound good on 2 or 3 different instruments. That way it will not cost you a fortune to start a good mic collection.
One of the last mic's I tryed was a condenser, it was a $99 Avlex.
Not too many people have heard of these mic's. But let me tell you what....Double Wow!!!

That damn $99 mic is unreal!!!!!!! For sure! I actually have 3 of these mic's. If you can get you hands on 1, try it out.

I was looking at the OM 2 as a potential SM57 repacement, I will really have to try to compare them now after hearing about how different they can sound... altough the OM2 and OM 7 after further exam are quite different capsules with different purposes. I'll really have to find a local dealer to hear them....

Avlex eh? I have not heard of them (about to checkemout), but I'm hearing about a new mic brand everyday ( after ten years in the biz, I can clearly see a massive rise in new companies! I'm sure you can see it too... and the expansion and exposure of companies that have been around for decades, but have remained 'noname' suppliers to other companies...wow there's a lot of mic choices now! I can see why people want more than ever the stability of the tried and tested mics :)

BTW, which Avlex condenser were you referring to? ( I love their 'good' 'better' 'best' marketing :)

I used to have the 6 mic fusion and the tom mics were a little dull- the kick was ok and the OH were ok but there is better out there- I usually put one on the HH and used 2 different mics for OH- f something- sorry, I forget the names of the mics, I used to have that kit in my old studio I sold over 2 years ago already... time flies when you are having fun*

As for the Avlex mic....it is a "AVS79"
Also when you find a dealer for the Audix stuff, try out all the OM series.
That's what I did, one right after the other until I narrowed it down to 1 of 3. Then quickly it became 1 of 2. Next thing ya know I was at the cash register.
Ohhh yeah, I looked at the one I bought also...I told you it was an OM7...I was mistaken

OM2 would be the one methinks Guy, as I can grab a three pack for a mere $199 US at muso's 'friend' . I've read some great things about their comarabilty to Shure SM's and their suitabilty on percussion, toms, guits, vox etc.

Tiger, thanks for yor reply, I've decided not to go with the drum mics for now...i'll try to get a good listen in first locally..It's probably a step down for my 'standards' but I'm just not sure.

I know there are comapnies out there doing great works with mics and stuff, but if we keep going the 'buy four SM57's' route, which I'm so tired of, and we don't give those comapnies a chance....then all our recordings will sound too similar if you ask me :) Well, yes, there's a heck of a lot more to it than mics! but you know what I mean

I was listening to a Kel mic..forget the model, cute little black thing...its really a nice tone.. nicer to me than a 57 or similar.
