I'm gathering on other posts that the newer Yamaha is a better machine. However, I'm trying to collect tools for outside clientele and need to make sure I so the right thing.

Well, I'll be using the unit for a glorified drum machine. The extra sound generation(sampling, etc...) will come in quite handy for arrangements and other artistic endeavors. I won't get a sampler for a while. I'll want something in the ballpk of an Akai S5000 or Emu 6400 when I'm ready.
With regard to stylings, I'll be exploreng new frontiers-HOPEFULLY! ...otherwise, Pop/Rock!
The way I find I like to work is simply sitting with my drum machine on my lap on the couch w/headphones. I just want to take it a step further than what I'm doing with my TR626 currently.

In that case, get the MPC. If you're already considering an Akai sampler purchase at a later date, then you'll appreciate the compatability and similar OS/terminlogy.
Also consider the available sample libraries. There are a HUGE number of disks for the Akai while the Yamaha (unfortunately) is somewhat lacking.
