well..the MOTU 2408 will work in the same way but it depends on what software you use..the 001 is limited to only 24 tracks with Pro Tools LE..the 2408 would be a better choice.
The MX2424 is a great unit! Especially with the new editing software coming out for it! I would go for that and get a removeable SCSI drive so that you can pop it into a PT system without any problems!!
Not sure if you are asking whether the 001 and the MOTU unit can work in the same computer..if so..yes! it can! As long as you have the PCI slots available for them.
If you are asking whether a mac with the right setup can do the same thing as the MX2424...two completely different fields, in a way. The MX2424 doesnt have an OS and PCI slots and resources to go by like a computer and you have to ptach to external gear for effects and dynamics. While the computer can have all the effects and much more all in one box without having to patch gear all the time. But it also depends on your systems specs to handle what you want it to do! There's many arguments on this topic that we could get into!!

Thank you, Opus! Yes!, I wanted to know if the two cards could work in one machine, cause what we already have is three DA 88, a Sony DMXR100 and a Mac w/a digi 001. The sony is fitted with three TDIF cards and an ADAT card. The studio owner wants to get rid of the DAs, the Mac/001, and get the Tascam. We, the staff of engineers, don´t want to lose the PT sistem. I hope you understand me, for my english is so basic...
Maybe the only possible solution is moving to TDM, but it is actually out of range...
I understand that we are not gonna be able to use PT with the Motu, in order to feed the console from the Mac. and we didn´t solve the SMPTE issue neither...

Well..what do you plan on using the computer for? For when people want to bring their projects over and you can dump them into the MX2424? Odd editing and so forth? I wouldnt get rid of a Mac in a recording studio at all...keep it around for mastering or make an editing suite with it! Plus you could use Peak OR Spark and do two track editing to CD! Plenty of reasons to keep the computer around...plus if you want to use the external computer based editor for the MX2424 you will want to keep it for that reason alone!!
