I'm most likely not the first person to have done this, but I've never heard of a snare being recorded like this. Today I was hastily setting up my drums to record while my parents were at a party. I had to finish before they got back cause they hate the noise. I only had half of my drums at this house: snare, floor tom, and ride. Thats it. I was only doing a really rough demo and its noise rock anyway so what does it matter. Anyway I realized I didn't have a snare stand so I looked around the room and the first thing I found that could hold up the snare without constricting the bottom head: A trashcan. Not like a huge kitchen trashcan, but not a little bathroom can either. Somewhere in the middle. The sound that resulted was warm, full, punchy, and very staccato. Im super happy with the sound of the recording and will probably consider using it again if I find the snare too snappy while recording.

And actually yes my MXL 990 took a nasty spill. I had it taped to a cymbal stand because I don't have a mic stand. I wasn't expecting to record yesterday. But I am very resourceful.
And I know the 990 isn't a very good mic but i'm impressed with the quality it produced.

i'm mean for $100 for a pair of mics the sound is great, but yea they are not the best, but very good for a low budget studio

I believe this is called any port in a storm. You could have possibly used your little brother? Don't worry, my mother and father didn't let me play drums either. So I played trumpet & French Horn.
Yeah and my favorite bass drums sound was from an 18" bass drum. About the same size as most floor toms. I love MD421's on both.
So was this a metal trash can or a plastic trash can? And if it was metal, was it an alloy or steel? This would be very important for everybody else if we decide to all start mounting our snare drums on top of studio trash cans. And if it was steel? What color was it? Were any microphones harmed in this production?
