Anyone done something http://www.sweetwat… like this [/]="http://www.sweetwat… like this [/]as a DIY project. Looks like it might be useful. Of course, one of the drummers I work with would still be sure to smack the darned thing out of position about half way through the song. But I don't think he can be modified.

He'd deserved to get smaked with the same 57... but that's neither here nor there, right?

If he's a flailer... think about area micing... two, maybe three 421's spaced just between drums and below strike level... rotate em' 90 if you hafta'... then call it done.

No sense in givin' the guy an easy target!

You def gotta pull more over kit from your OH's, but hey... beats buyin' capsules and covers!

just my humble $.02 worth...

Very interesting and cool mod, DVD. I mic up horn players on a regular basis and 57's can be too "spikey" for them. I much prefer the ATM25 and ATM63 mics for this app, but they are getting harder (and more expensive) to find as both models have been discontinued :x
This mod may just be the ticket. Thanks!

I don't think leaving it open is going to work without the air chamber at the back. If open, I think this would change the mike to a velocity character (figure of 8 ) instead of the original cardoid. It depends on the '57 element itself though (I haven't bothered looking at one for a loooong time!). Leaving the capsule open would very likely affect the tonal quality of the '57.

DIY Kit

Anyone done something like this as a DIY project.

We offer a DIY kit: http://www.granelliaudiolabs.com/order.html

I don't think leaving it open is going to work without the air chamber at the back.

That's right, it will very different with the back open, and increasing or decreasing the air volume of this chamber affects the sound. We had to make sure we had that right before we moved forward machining our part.

Recordinghacks.com wrote an article on that process:

Thanks, guys.
