Looking for the best Bass drum mic. -I have used Audix D6 - The AKG D112 and Sure Beta 52A - But I'm sure there's something a little cleaner out there. Someone said the Electro-Voice Re20 is what you see Bonham using even though I think its more of a vocal mic. Electro-Voice also has a Bass drum mic a N/D868 that I have never tried. Who out there has the real skinny. dirtyktm :roll:

Hmmm, what about those mics do you not like? Do you want a condensor sound? A Ribbon? I believe AT make a kick mick with a dynamic and condensor element in one body. Not shure the number or how it sounds. ATM 25? D12? U47? R-121? SM7? MD421? Those are some more usual suspects with a curveball or two added in. Tried an SM57or a pressure zone mic (PZM) ?

While doing live sound this past weekend, a drummer had an e602 attached inside his kick. Sounded great. I needed barely any eq just took a smidge of low-mids out. Of course, the kick drum itself sounded good to begin and im sure that made the biggest difference.

The place i do live sound for uses a beta 52 whuch afine kick drum mic as well.

And I own a D6.

Ive had good results with all of them so i guess im no help.

But if you want a great bang for your buck get the Audix DP5 kit for $650. 5 mics: D1, (2) D2, D4 and a D6 and it comes with 4 rackmount vices and a nice case and the nice case is what really counts, right? hehe.

Sounds good. Ill give the Sennheiser a try. I'm not really sure why I'm not satisfied with the D6 I was using but I just sold it with the rest of the Audix mic set -D2s D4 and D1. I have found that the best snare and tom mic (that I have used) are the Beta57s. They are really clean and dont have that square edge sound that makes toms and snares a little iratating. Theres a cat selling them for $95. on Ebay, thats a steal. Thanks for your imput any one else want to pipe in,by all means go ahead.

I'm going to start sounding like a broken record ....

RE20 with Recorderman's sub mic. Actually, pretty much any of the fine mics listed in this thread paired with Recorderman's sub mic will give you all the attack you need and more bottom end (without having to actively filter, pad or compress) than you'll ever want. I built my sub mic for about $30 and it works like a charm. In fact, my drum teacher who produces professionally, had me build one for him.

I have used all of the mics listed so far in this thread with the exception of the Sennheiser. I would add the AKG D12e to the list especially if you're going to record a bass drum with the resonant head still on for jazz or that 60's kick sound. If I had to choose just one, however, it would probably be the EV RE20 because it can be used for lots of other things.
