RODE Mic:

Announces the release of the RODE iXY stereo microphone for the Apple iPhone and iPad, as well as the RODE Rec audio recording app for iOS devices. RODE launched both today at the CES exhibition in Las Vegas.

When used together they are capable of recording at up to 24-bit/96kHz – the only product on the market to provide this level of resolution on Apple iOS devices! This has huge applications for both music recording as well as on-camera and general sound design.

I also urge you to visit http://www.ixymic.com and watch this video http://www.vimeo.com/rodemic/ixy.

Whole new generation evolving. Some of it is cool and other stuff, they have it. I don't even begin to try and understand how anyone could bear listening to compressed music on earbuds. It hurts my hearing. And looking at my iphone does something terrible to my eyes after about 30 sec.

I see this as an alternative to an H4n or other portable hand held recording device. It may look cooler than it sounds though. I look forward to hearing one of these. Maybe I should ask RODE to send us one here. I'm guessing it sounds pretty decent!
Watching the video, It excites me to see this as an inspiring new direction for recording. Not everyone will go out and buy an H4n but they may buy this. It may be just the thing to really kick music into motion. I hope so. I love the idea of everyone on the block interested in recording. , Not having the ability to sound good is where I come in. The more things like this, the better!

On the down side, my daughter dropped our H4n and one of the mic's broke off. Repairing it is a royal pain now. I asked for a part to be shipped but I have to send it away instead. It has the same XY appearance as that so I think it would get damaged pretty easy. But kids don't drop their iphones too often so who knows. Looks cool, looks vulnerable.

Looks like that would be very useful. Capsule XY mount very similar to my Rode NT4, which is a great sounding all-around stereo small diaphragm condenser. These capsules are about the same diameter but slightly shorter in length. The capsules in the NT4 and the NT5 are interchangeable, same as the NT55 I believe. Wonder if you can interchange the NT55 capsules with these, that could prove useful!
I won't be getting one of these, but I looked on their site and it said that current stock has sold out. This will be a hot seller!
Thanks for posting this Chris. You are our Gear Scout!
