I'm looking for a new Large Condenser Mic. My current roster of mics are (4)RODE NT-1A's, RODE NT-5, AT-4040, (2) 421's, and the run of the mill 57's and 58's.

I'm looking for something that will sound great on vocals as well as OH's. I don't quite have the funds for a matched pair of 414's, which would be ideal. I've been looking at the AT-4030, RODE K2, and the Studio Projects C-series, but I'm open to any suggestions for any other mic as well.

FWIW (It does deserve a mention)

Guitar Center is no longer stocking Groove Tubes mics, and they are blowing out the GT33 for $99 ea, and the TUBE GT-44 w/PS and ShockMount for $199 (retailed over $600 if I recall).

I snapped up a pair of the GT-44's, but have not used them yet. They are a "Mid Diaphragm" .75" with a Pentode tube, and external PS! They have numerous good reviews under their belt, too! Supposed to "smooth out" transients with their slow slew rates, and are said to be very digital friendly. I, too, will be dual-purposing mine for Overheads and VOX.

I was also considering SP C-3 or a pair of C-1's, but this GT deal could not be passed up IMO ($1200 worth of mics for $400!). Dive in QUICK, they are going fast...

The TL-II has a little more high end boost to it. It's a brighter mic. If I could only record vocals with a 414, it would have to be a TL-II. Luckily, I don't have to record vocals with only 414's. A 414 certainly wouldn't be my first choice for a vocal mic.

Do you know the full scoop on this? I thought GC was the only retailer for GT for the past few years. FWIW, I like GT mics for vocals and all purpose/spot mics. Plus, if this extends to the Brick mic pre/DI, this could be a great deal! You would be hard pressed to find a better pre/di for $399 - if it's on clearance beyond that, well then that's a hell of a deal.

Hey Cucco,

I just picked up my GT44's from my local GC - $400 for the pair w/ external PS, Shockmounts, and hard case. They are selling the Brick/GT55 combos for $499! I don't know why they are no longer carrying the GT mics, but that seems to be the deal. CORRECTION - They are NOT discontinuing the GT line, they are just blowing out old stock! The GT44 and GT33 were not even listed in the latest GC flyer, but the Brick/GT55 combo is listed, so they likely have some left... :)

If you say the Brick is THAT good, I may have to add that to the GC Credit Card (along with the included GT55). No Interest for 12 months!

PS - I just had my local GC hold a Brick/GT55 combo. So I'm in a bit of debt now, so what :) ? Should make a nice addition to my slowly-but-surely growing collection ;)
