So I, m running out of cpu and Im gonna print the drums onto a stereo track and move on with this song.
Any tips from you guys would be appreciated. Recorded straight to 002 rack.
Im thinking the drums sound too far away, theres no room mic, and if I turn down the overheads i loose the ride.

In regard to opening it up: You ask and you get!

LOVE THIS! I would love to Jam with you. Well, at least do the [[url=http://="http://recording.or…"]hybrid mojo[/]="http://recording.or…"]hybrid mojo[/] on all your tracks.
Very groovy track. :)

This is what you need to do to it: Hybrid and Bricasti M7 (including a few analog goodies), DONE!
It Took 20 min. recording of a recording.

For a reference, I hope you don't mind? smoke

well i listened to your re do and i am impressed. the verb adds a good vibe helps with the pitch issues and it is a nice sounding reverb. i would have added a bit more of it though. :)

but what really impresses me is how much better the overall tone is and the gain your were able to squeeze out of it with the hybrid system. i do think we have an ME in the works here bud.

what i would like to hear you do with it is to sweep around in the 3 to 7 k area and see if you can notch out some of the "tick on the kick" and maybe pull out a little more articulation on the bass guitar with a slight narrow boost between 150 to 300 hZ?

Well, here is a perfect example of fix it in the mix before it goes to the mastering. But, here's a quick attempt to actually dig in and try something for the fun of it. And where the true ME experience comes into play, that I don't profess to be.

Check the level increase though. Not a problem with this rig. But it looses some spark when trying to get that "tick" out. The entire track has a bit of edge to it. Part of the system our friend has. He's done a wonderful job with this. I love it.

Summery:

I tried to improve the kick but it takes away from the mix. I lifted the bottom but don't like it as much once I pulled out that "tick" . Here it is!

yeah that helps the kick bunches but hurts the snare. i don't mind what it does for the overall track sort of "mellows" a bit. the bass is waaaay better. to bad you can't keep the edge on the snare and do what you've done here. i suppose you could go through it and slice the snare hits (tedious) and then mix them back in under and play that back in parallel. that would only take FOREVER! lol

too bad you don't have the multi's

a second thought. what kind of gates do you have in your DAW? can you take the original track, key the gates through an eq to open just long enough to let the snare though? it would be ok if it missed one once in awhile .. just make it sound like the drummer didn't hit as hard. then record that onto a track and play back in parallel under the processed track just loud enough to preserve the edge of the snare? or you could just use the keyed track to trigger a snare sample.

hey! this is fun!

I have the technology but It would be easier to ask our friend to send me the mix. Or, (if I was actually part of this process) if the client or other parties involved gave me ( the mixing engineer) the creative go ahead to use my mixing tricks. Which in the case would be, use a sampler to fix those things and/or take this song to a whole new level.

Yes!

Welcome to my new direction of recording.org and my life as a mixer. I am so tired of talking about mics I figured its time for us to do what I call "Problem Based Learning" PBL. Something my sister is developing for universities around the world in dentistry. I got the idea from her years ago but needed the gear to actually start doing it here. For real, not just talk and at a very high level of audio. I'm not afraid to step into the batters box and be scrutinized. 20 thousand in programming gives me confidence. Hopefully this will inspire others to get involved in this type of learning more.

What a great way to learn and practice our skills. a win win for everyone including the manufacturers.

Drum replacement and triggering in Samplitude and Sequoia

For our particular snare issue, it might be faster for me to sample something, and duplicate it on all the snare spots, or, play it real time. If I was to actually take this on as a mixing project, I would go about this all much different from the beginning.

If we had the individual tracks, there are other ways that help preserve the dynamics.
Here's an excellent tutorial from Tim on how you can use Sequoia via transient detection and triggering samples. But we could fix this song up pretty fast just by remixing it too.

Really like what you did with the Bricasti there audiokid . I dont have any outboard gear here . but I do have a room upstairs bout 50 ft long , ceilings 11ft one side, to 16 ft the other ,15 ft wide
mostly wood. I am going to re amp up there. I will do that next , see if I can something close to what the Bricasti has done.
We have our songs all written for this project and i am committed to do the best I can with what we have here at home. Ive spent about 3 yrs reading this site and a few others to help me with the huge learning curve
required to pull off recording our own material and being happy with the listening experience.
Money permitting I will look into mastering engineer if we feel the tracks deserve that treatment , ( i hope they do....lol)

Hats off to you audiokid and good luck with getting clients here on your site, With your hybrid system Im sure you will do well.

With the snare , The top sm57 I had to delete because the microphone had a fault and rattled periodically, so I only have the 58 underneath and the spill of the other mics for the top.
Maybe I could use a sample as you suggest , ok I will do that before re amping .
I figured now after this conversation that I will re amp in the room before I print the drums to 1 or 2 stereo tracks, and give myself more room to move.

Thanks for your input , I will repost in a few days after the drums are in 1 track

I 'll leave it on soundcloud and you leave yours there as a reference too , that;ll be cool and useful to me .
Still got a long way to go for what we have intended for this song . it has soulful vocals and call /answer harmonies ,organ, guitar,
replace the guiro with one not as busy and some other little bits
to come , but I wanted to get a good drum bass sound to work with first. I just finished adding a snare hit from my limited free downloaded library.
Seems to do the trick, sounding beefier and not as harsh.

Thanks , will come back after I re amp in my room , fingers crossed its a good thing.
