I am doing some research for a friend that wants to get into recording as a hobby. He needs a pair of phones for monitoring while recording and maybe for playing guitar at night when he can't turn the amp on. He will not be using these for mixing or referencing or anything like that. He just wants a nice pair of phones for around the budget mark.

I use a set of Yamaha RH5MA for studio use. They sound GREAT compared to a slightly cheaper set of Audio Technica's I also use. They are very, very clear and crisp sounding. The only downside is they don't grab your head very well and tend to fall off occasionally which can be a downside if you're tracking but otherwise they are a great set of headphones.

It seems like the priced has raised since I bought them. I believe they are still worth it. Good luck.

While I don't totally agree, he has a point. Go with a reputable brand in that range. Sennheiser, AKG, AT, Sony...
Any phones at that price are going to be poor - better to get the knock-off of something good actually made by the folks who built the good ones.

I use them more than my akg 270's. They are nice and light and they sound decent and detailed to my ear. Plus they are a closed back so they block out outside sound.

They may not be robust enough for "recording animals".
But they are uber cheap.
