My dillema is that I've tried everything to get the first few milliseconds of bass attack to thump, even chaining several compression instances ( plugins) together. My current settings are (hard knee) 20 ms attack, 50 ms release, and 10:1 (I am smashing the thing.) I'm looking to accentuate the thump of the bass attack. SPL transient designer is supposedly excellent for this, but I don't own one.
Any suggestions are appreciated (except "get a new bass player.") . I'm going direct with the bass by the way.

You may be able to attain a greater "thwack" sound on the bass by slowing the attack time down on your compressor/limiter a great deal, i.e. slow! You may also want to speed up the release time that will increase the apparent loudness level and sustain of the bass? Your ratio is probably fine?
I find this problem you are mentioning fairly typical of crappy pickups on substandard basses and there's nothing much that can really make garbage sound like caviar.

You can't really fix or enhance what isn't there to start with. If you know what you want and need to hear, then you or somebody has to play the bass that way. Then, and only then, can you really take it to the next level.
And NO ONE can tell you what specific settings to use without hearing the original and hearing the results of the tool you are using. Since most plugs that do compressors suck, your most likely stuck.
Get it right at the source before you record and then when you use plugs, you'll have more to work with and be less reliant on tryinig to use plugs to clean up and enhance what you should have recorded to begin with.
