Hey! I am considering purchasing an external harddrive for backup purposes. DVDs just aren't fast or big enough for my recording projects. Does anyone have any suggestions on brands, types, etc. I was looking at a Seagate 160GB USB2.0/Firewire drive that looks pretty good. Any thoughts?
I will mainly use it to store backups of recording projects. I don't recording all the time so 160GB will be large enough for quite a while. Thanks!

I would strongly reccomend a firewire drive from LaCie. In denmark, where I live, the LaCie drives are expensive, but I musy say, that I'm glad I used the ekstra money.
It simply works. It never stops. I never get any errors, and even though I occasionally knocs it of the table, or kick it acroos the floor, due to clumsy behaviour, it just works.
Try it. I can only reccomend it.

I've been using Maxtor Diamond Plus 8 or 9, I use several and have no trouble. Check out http://www.directron.com for drive caddies and firewire cases (Lian Li is the brand I've been using). The Seagate is a good unit too. Look for 7600RPM drive speed and liquid bearing. Firewire is a great way to go because you can hot swap drives (no need to reboot with every drive change if you use several).

You got it - Find an external enclosure with the Oxford 911 chip and a descent PS, add a good HD (I use Maxtor), and you should be pretty bulletproof IMO. And save tons over Glyph! :D

I have started makng my own. There are some really decent hd enclosures on ebay for as low as $40 that have both USB and FW controllers (so you don't have to worry about compatibility should you take the drive to another system). This way, you can buy any quality hd you like, and usually for a significantly cheaper price. I am a huge fan of Western Digital drives; I have had far fewer problems with errors and data corruption with them.
