Hi

I've strated to use a Focusrite Saffire (firewire interface) in my desktop Vaio, and there is a constant noise (white noise, clicks, pops etc). This noise seems to be generated from windows -- e.g., the noise changes when I move the mouseor when particular options are selected. Recording and playback are working fine -- but this messy background noise is constantly in the background. Can anyone advise please?

If it is not the firewire connection itself or the preamp then it maybe a problem with some utility or program running in the background of your computer. There are lots of freeware programs that will tell you what programs are running on your computer (hitting ALT, CTRL, DELETE and looking at the task manager will not tell you all the processes you are running.) There use to be a program called END IT ALL but I have not seen it on the web for some time, that would tell you (and let you stop) all the programs running in the background). You may have program that seems simple like a weather updater that is causing your CPU to be busy all the time. I would first check the firewire connection by substituting a known good firewire cable and then try a known working firewire preamp. If that still produces noise then I would start looking into what is running on your computer. Best of luck!

Hi Dori

There are certain safety issues you must bear in mind when fixing a mains earth loop noise problem. For that reason, I wouldn't be comfortable telling you how to do this in case I failed to give you absolutely safe advice.

Perhaps someone on the forum -- a qualified electrician would be best -- could help out here?
