We've been using a Marantz PMD201 Portable Cassette Recorder for recording lectures and we've had some problems with the machine recording a little slow - about 3% slow.
We're thinking of trying a new recorder and we're considering the Tascam 102 MKII Stereo Cassette recorder to replace the Marantz: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/detail/base_id/35315
Based on your experience, do you think we'll get a more reliable recording if we go with this Tascam recorder?

Does it matter?
If it records slow, it will also play back slow.
Doesn't seem to be a problem.

If it appears slow on another machine then it would be recording fast....
If it's recording fast it is most likely a slipped belt that isn't sitting in the groove of the pulley gear properly.
If the belt has slipped it means that the belt has lost its elasticity and should be replaced..... and re-fitted......
If , on the other hand , things sound fast on another machine it could be wear on the motor because it would be recording slow....
A motor with less torque would do this.
Tascam has a great rep for rugged quality units in the upper lin
Tascam has a great rep for rugged quality units in the upper line. The others are not really in the same league although they are as good anything else. I've owned and used the 122MKIII for over 10-years now and it is still as good as they day I bought it with the heads just starting to show wear. The 122MKII is cheaper and is also a great unit.
