Has anyone tried the HM-1 on toms. I record mainly blues and rock and the D2's are fine for rock but are not what I'm looking for with blues. I'm looking for a rounder more natural tone (almost jazz like)for blues and the HM-1's sound like they would fit the bill.
The max SPL (134 db) looks okay, the side address uni pattern should take care of cymbal bleed, the small size would fit into tight places and from what I've read they seem like they have the sound I'm looking for. Plus I've heard they sound great on amps also (I love multitaskers).
Does anyone else think this might be a good tom mic?

There is a decent home studio in my neck of the woods that recently bought 3 KEL mics. The studio owner said he tried them on toms and said he likes them better than 57's, but not as much as 421's. He said that he especially likes them on guitar cabinets. I'm considering picking up one of each because you can never have too many mics. If I like em....I'll buy more.
It's hard to compare a "budget" mic to the legendary 421, but just saying that they out perform a 57 on a guitar cab is a pretty f'ing bold statement in my book and I'm willing to put it to the test for the price.

I am working on some different recordings with the HM-1's. So far I have used them on vocals through a Mackie pre (surprisingly good considering I held the mic in my hand as I sat in front of the mixer) vocals through a 9098 (better), and guitar amps through the Sebatron (killer!). I will post mp3 audio clips when I publish the review.
I will be using them this weekend as OH / tom mics in a 4 mic drum set up, when recording rhythm tracks with my buddies in our little basment rehearsal studio. I'll keep you posted on the results.
The HM-1 is a very well built mic ... I was looking at the KEL Audio website and I saw a reference to the low price as an introductory offer ... I wouldn't be surprised if these things go up in price as soon as they have gained a piece of the marketshare. My advice is snag a few while they're still cheap ... KEL has a 21 day, no questions asked return policy ... you simply cannot go wrong with these mics IMO.

Kurt, I'm really looking forward to hearing your impressions of the HM-1's on drums, toms specifically. If they sound half as good as the M9's you recommended which BTW have become my main overheads, I'll be ordering a pair right away.

There is a link with MP3's on their site w/ various instruments. I have also been hearing the "buzz" these mics have been creating. They seem like a perfect "counterpart" to the D-2's. Seems like a hell of a bargain IMO - so BE CAREFUL! OTOH - For $100 a pop, it is hard to go wrong. Not much to loose, but I guess there is quite a bit to be gained if they suit your needs...
