when i first started out i just started recording guitar with the Line6 toneport with the gearport software, i found it really easy to use, and produced a great sound for what i was after at the time, i started, and currently still record drums using a roland electric kit triggering programs such a BFD etc.. what's your budget? you got any software already? any equipment at all at the moment?
cheers!

To record your FIRST song I recommend booking time at a local studio and going through the entire process for ONE song only. Beginning to end. Watch closely and ask decent questions. Tell the engineer what your plans are. When they see that you're willing to shell out some cash to learn how its done to a certain extent, you'll more than likely get some very detailed and pertinent information to help you start.

You'll also know by the end of these sessions whether you really WANT to record at all. This in itself may save you thousands of dollars in the long run.
