Hi folks. I'm relatively new to computer recording but have been a piano player all my life. I have read tons of stuff on all the neato gear that's out there but my needs are simple. Most of the recording I will do will be with piano and strings... and an occasional synth pad. no mics or guitars(not anytime soon anyway). Not a lot of bells and whistles needed here but I do want to make top notch piano and string recordings. What kind of midi/audio sequencing software do y'all recommend? Should I invest in a softsynth such as gigasampler? or would that cost too much to justify what I want to do with it?

From your post, it sounds like you will mainly be working with high quality analog sound. If you want to add synths etc. you will need some sort of midi processer (like Cubase, Cakewalk etc.) But I would advise playing the finished midi over to an analog studio for processing and mixing. My favourite is Cool Edit Pro 1.2a. There are thousands of messages on different BBSs dissing CEP, praising other systems, this is just my personal fave.
Top convert form midi to analog I use Audio Compositor which renders midi files without using a soundcard (but it can use soundfonts!) it is fast and high quality.
All of this will depend on funding but CEP is not expensive, neither is Audio Compositor, so it will really come down to how much you want to use on the midi part.

If you are mainly just recording MIDI tracks and really dont need audio that much then you might look into Cakewalk or Cubase Score. I dont know if you need heavy notation ability or not but both programs offer scoring abilities. Gigastudio is a sampler software. Find the sounds you want and load em up, set up the MIDI triggering..and voilla.. a good sounding sequence. Gigastudio or Gigasampler is definately a resource hog in itself for memory and disk drive space. Samples are very nice sounding and you get incredible response. You could run both Cubase/Cakewalk with Gigastudio/Gigasampler at teh same time if you were primarily using MIDI only. A system that would be good is something like a PIII 650 or up with about 500MB of RAM. I'm sure there are others who will tell you one software is better than the other but really try downloading one and trying out the demo if available from the manufacturer.
