How can I get the snare to seem as if it is right smack in front of me ?
I have sampled hits of strike drum machine.
I am using a TL space reverb and am experimenting that and
some gate on an aux channel.
I am happy with the tone and the attack of the snare now but need it to come up closer.

Ah, sometimes snares sound really nice alone, samples from an album, drum programs etc but are processed to fit that song or a certain effect. make sure you aren't adding width to it because you will be doing the opposite of what you are trying to achive, which is an In-Your-Face SMACK!
Don't be using a stereo sample. Keep the snare mono and then add your effect if you like to the track or the final mix. Remember that less is more when it comes to effects and especially reverb.

Sounds like you just don't have the right snare sound then. Why don't you add a sidestick in it. Find something with a really good crack and mix it into the snare. You can put more reverb in one or the other to give it some depth.

I do this all the time. My snares have the bottom and top plus an overhead mixed in. You blend the three or four to get the best sound.

hope that helps!
