well I'm starting with this home recording stuff, and I have very little equipment/hardware but I think it's enough to star off with some home tunes... The problem is I'm using Adobe Audition 3.0 and I've tried a bunch of softwares that don't require an interface (cause I don't own one) so I connect everything to the "line-in" port on my computer... This is my conection: MXL 990 mic---Behringer mini console with phantom power----line in in PC...
The problem I'm having is that I have SO MUCH NOISE in my recordings, it's like a terrible "hiss" coiming in to my recordings and I can't figure out where it comes from! I even bought new cables thinking it would get better, but it's still the same...
The other problem I'm having is that the connection I make to my pc is kind of weird, cause in order for me to get a stereo sound I have to unplug half of the 1/8 cable tip even though it's a stereo cable... (two little black lines on the tip) ... any suggestions??

If money is a real concern, you can get a lexicon alpha for @ 79 dollars online. it will sound much better than what you have. it does not have phantom power, so for the mic you will have to go from an out on the console(mixer) to the line in on the alpha. for a little more you can get an interface with phntom power.

The noise is almost certainly from the use of the line in. The line in is probably mono, so with your cable jinks you are getting a dual mono instead of stereo sound, again without more detail its hard to say.
The line in is going to be a 3c chip converting the audio at a very low bitrate; effectively you actually don't have enough to start off with some home tunes.
You may be able to fiddle with the gain staging a bit but effectively you need an audio interface - and I'd propose that the cost of even a basic one outweighs the heartache and dissatisfaction you are experiencing.
Internal EMU interfaces for PCs are very cheap and very good for the money, but anything that converts audio to USB or ideally Firewire will be much much better for you.
