I'd give it a couple of months, supposedly existing software will work without any modification. The full 64bit OS isn't due until October.

I've been driving Logic Audio in OSX since the last Novevember. It's rock solid, only one crash caused by a plug I was beta testing.

So far Logic, DP, and PT are solid on OSX. Most plugs and hardware drivers should be ported by the end of summer.

Steinberg products are shakey, I own both platforms and they are shakey on PC also with the "poof" feature.

Standard IDE drives, standard SVGA supported.

Forget P4 machines altogether! With Macs going to 64 bit, and AMD pushing their new Athlon64, I think we might be in the midst of 64 bit computing everywhere! That will be nice. Then Intel can finally sell some of those nice Itanium processors that never seemed to catch on. :) Of course, it's a good year + 1/2 until the computer audio industry will make the switch, but it's nice to know it's on the way.

yeah, well....I can't imagine what the CPU temperature of the AMD 64 bits are going to be like...currently they are friggen super hot and melt quite easily....

64 bits...yeah..good luck waiting for the recovery of the system when it crashes...will take twice as long....

I personally think the whole 64 bit evolution won't be for another couple of years. Too many bugs to be sorted out till then.

No worry, its a great design and good value when you consider all the things you can do and get with it?

The 64 bit Athlons are rumored to come with a Thermador refrigerator to put the CPU in. Good for keeping the brew cool as well.

You can also get out a pizza and throw it in the new CPU slide out tray just above the heat sink (like a 12" CD tray) for that 2:00 AM craving as you play games.

The G5 has four "thermal zones" all with software controlled fans that are said to run at a quiet 35 decibels. Ever heard a G4 iMac fan running? No? That's 35 decibels. Also the next major release of OS X codenamed "Panther" will NOT be 64bit. It is still compiled at 32.

Yes, Daniel, Macs use the same hard drives as PCs. Most of the hardware is very similar to if not the same standard off the shelf parts.

OS X is extremely stable and well supported by Digidesign, Emagic, MOTU and others.

A major computer company manipulating test results to favor it's own product????

FOR SHAME!!!

The next thing you know, they'll be stealing each other's ideas for GUIs and Mice and Desktops and things.

I'm revolted, devastated and crushed and am calling my attorney. They can't just come along and pop my trust-bubble like this. Somebody's gonna pay!

Now -- which crook has the deepest pockets, Gatesey-poo or Jobs??? I guess I'll just sue 'em all and let Justice sort 'em out!

Boy, it sure is a good thing we got Opus on the wall looking out for us unsuspecting, dumb MacSheep before we get slaughtered and don't know it.

I, for one will never buy my next Mac until Opus says it's OK.

Actually, if tongue had been poked any harder into cheek, I could pass for Dizzy Gillespie.

But it's all in fun, right?

On the noise front:

Apple is claiming the G5 is only one third as loud as the Dual 1.42gHz MDD G4, which makes about the same noise as my Dual 1.25gHz MDD G4 with its snazzy $20 Apple here's-a-retro-fit-and-gee-we're-sorry power supply and fans.

If all that's true, the G5 will be as quiet as the iMac I use at the office and that will mean I can open a mic in the same room with it and no "beer-cooler" or "Drac's Shac" or "Quiet Cab".

Of course, Opus has to approve it first....

I use a G4 450-mHz Cube for my Cubase needs. While I admit I haven't pushed it (never gone beyond 12 channels with 5 effects simultaneously), I've found it to be reliable, stable and quite satisfactory.

(Oh. . . and it has no fan, either.)

That said, I just about shitta brick when I saw the G5 interior. . . it is absolutely beautiful. Wow!

Yup.

Like the inside of a Stephen Paul Audio C-12 or U47 -- radiused bends in straight silver wires, solder joints like silver pearls, everything clean, everything orderly, perfection the norm.

Artistry.

It's more than just neatness for appearance sake. It is the evidence of design excellence skillfully executed and painstakingly finished to the absolute limit of ability.

Opus is there.

Stephen and Tony are there.

I'll get there someday in my guitar-building.

And now I got the Opus Seal to go drop the side of the G5 and see if Apple is there again.

Of course, I'm a cheap date when it comes to Apple. With the new iSight camera, they hit the nail squarely on center -- even the packaging is impressive. Took 30 seconds to install and hook up with my daughter in Jersey through iChatAV. I recommend it to any Maczoid marooned on a desert island and wanting to phone home. And the "phone call" is free !!!
