Hi. I am looking for a pair of passive, magnetically shielded (have to be, due to proximity to PC monitors) nearfields. I have a budget of about £200. My brother had a pair of Alesis Point 7's, which seemed OK. I need my monitors to be small like these. Any help would be gratefully received.

Well, I've bought a pair of Alesis Monitor 1 mk2's. They were £140 and they'll do me OK. You are totally right that you have to spend far more for actual good monitors, but these are a good average-kind-of studio monitor, I think.
I also have a decent amp (Harman Kardon Citation 24 - from the time when they made good amps), which as you probably know is half the story when it comes to speakers.
The third half (!) of course, is setup/room acoustics. I'll admit I know only the basics of this, but if you have a pair of Adams/Questeds etc. in a bathroom, perched on the medicine cabinet, even they will sound crap (silly example I know, but makes the point). Not that my room acoustics are any good, mind you.
The other thing is, the speakers they are replacing are Mission 700's from about 1982. These are good budget hi fi speakers, but the Alesis are far more revealing, top-end wise.
One day, I shall have they money for proper monitors, but these will do in the meantime!

I can't think of anything in that price range that I would recomend. For good monitors you need to spend quite a bit more before you get into anything that is any good.
