Please tell me if this *should* work: I have a
Thinkpad A21e (600MHz Celeron, 128MB, 10GB HD) and
Ego-Sys U2A USB audio interface.
Software N-track, Cooledit2000. (I'm playing with PC editing before spending real $)

What's happening is when I try to play back a stereo WAV (16 bit, 44.1kHz) is that it plays fine for about 30 sec and then drops out or burps as the HD light on Tpad blinks. I get the same results playing back thru the Tpad's internal (Crystal) sound card or thru the USB interface, and with either N-track or Cooledit2000. I know the WAV is OK because the droputs are not in the same spots each time and they sync with HD activity.

I know this is not an optimum audio set-up, but I thought that with people talking about 24 tracks on 1.4GHz Athlons and all, I would be able to record or play 2 tracks on a not-that-old notebook. Is something wrong (what?)or do I really need more horsepower? :confused:

Well...what OS are you running? Have you defragged your hard drive? Enabled DMA for the hard drive? Tried it without the power supply attached..in other words running off of the battery instead? Drop outs usually means system issues..whether it's OS related or hardware related I'm not sure at the moment. Tell me what OS you are using

Running Win98SE, yes to the defrag, tried only with AC adapter. I have the power profile set to "presentation". This seemed best but still is not dropless. I don't know about DMA. Where do I find this?

The consistent symptom is that there is HD (HD LED on) at each dropout - every 3 sec or so after about 30 sec of OK playback at the start of a song. If I stop the song in the middle, the same thing happens 30 sec later at different a spot.

Ok..sounds like hard drive issues to me in a big way!!! The way to tell if you have DMA turned on ..go to your device manager..expand the hard drive listing..on the hard drive double click it and go to properties or advanced settings...make sure DMA is checked!!!
Also defrag the drive!!! very important!!Especially with only one drive it gets bogged down very easily!! Go to my website and get the optimization guide for Win98 on my articles page!
