Im wondering whether anyone knows how Skid Row managed to get such an awesome "guitar" sound on the Slave to the Grind album... would anyone out there know what equipment they used on that album at the time? and how they went about recording guitars?
I tried to simulate the sound using a POD XT but was unsuccessful... the POD XT seems to be more trouble then what its worth in getting a great metal distortion though thats a different story altogether... So I'm going to try Micing the amp instead.

Yeh, we (my band) find it VERY hard to find a distortion that we are all happy with... POD sounds very synthetic no matter what we do, (the clean sounds arnt to bad though)... Ive downloaded about 200 heavy metal presets from the line 6 tone transfer site... and to add to that we have even tried creating our own presets... though nothing can match the sound we are after... nothing sounds like a real amp. Our major difficulty was finding a decent power ballad distortion something really smooth, crisp, heavy and maintains clarity at the same time. The problem may be us though... we want to record a professional sounding album, i guess it would be rather impossible to do so with only a guitar POD... cause is reasonable when it comes to preproduction and maybe it was intended for them purposes.

That would be a combination of marshals. I believe a super lead from the 70s and a jcm 800. The guitar/pickup combination has alot to do with the sound, also the way you play and the size of your strings. I know the amps were modified for more gain. Are you really having a problem with the pod?
