Hey guys, I'm new to the site, looks like a good thing going on here. Anyways, I have a Tascam DP-01 multi-track digital recorder. Once you're done working on a song on it, you can hook up to your computer through USB. Well, when I transfer the song files to my computer, it's really quiet when i play it, and of course, if I burn a CD of it, it's reallly quiet too. Any suggestions? Am I not setting the levels right when I'm recording?

Hi RecordRookie,
This is a pretty common issue for most people. You probably didn't do anything "wrong" it's just that your average (RMS) levels are low. A lot of people cure this by using a brickwall limiter plugin or a compressor or multiband compressor plugin on the master output bus. You can do this but if you're not careful you can come out with a really squashed sound. Mastering Engineers are more experienced and have the right tools to bring your overall average levels up with little sacrifice. A lot of todays popular music is really squashed to get the "volume up". It robs your tunes of dynamics though. Try to find a happy medium between "Loud" and "Dynamic" Good Luck!
