so I'm slightly contemplating getting a laptop to use for my daw. I'm very hesitant as I've never purchased a laptop due to the price/performance ratio, but that gap seems to be closing so i figured having a portable rig might be really cool. My main concern is the noise factor. The ability to not be able to move the cpu or isolate the noise it creates so that I can mix properly is a big deal to me. Although I meticulously examined the noise level a notebook puts out. If anyone has any input as far as this is concerned or if you could think of any other drawbacks granted hardware specs are the same let me know. Or if anyone has a particular notebook they use with great success feel free to input that as well. I will of course be using an external hard drive for my audio either a 7200 or 10000 rpm drive, and will want to connect a second monitor. I will be using an RMEfireface and running sawstudio. Thanks

i had built a custom pc for my DAW, but then i bought a retail gateway laptop from best buy. it was on sale and i needed a laptop anyway. so i decided to give it a go with my firepod. at first, i was getting pops and clicks all over the place. i thought it had to do with the 4200rpm hard drive because every other spec was above and beyond that of my custom pc. but all i had to do was disable the wireless internet connection and it has worked flawlessly since then. i also experienced a lot of ground noise at first, too. but a simple ground lift adapter cured that problem. now i have no problems whatsoever. the laptop works out really well since i do a lot of recording between my friend's house and my apartment. i use cubase, nuendo, and wavelab. the one thing i made sure to do was wipe the hard drive clean and install a bare OS.
anyway, the model is a gateway mx7515. here are the specs:

granted, i know my laptop probably isn't the greatest solution. but i've had tons of success with it and even got rid of my custom pc.

the Intel Sonoma (p4 mobile)laptops are dead quiet and outperform a full P4 on top of it.
there are a few places to get a laptop where 7200 rpm is standard.
instead of 4200 or 5400.
make sure you get one with a 915 PM chipset and nothing else.
not a P4 with a 915 chipset.
