Is there a way to use an SPDIF or AES stream as a word clock? I've looked all around on the web with no luck, which leads to me think this might be a stupid question. If it is, feel free to throw things. Just aI'm for the body.

The AES or SPDIF signals will automatically have a clock built into the carrier. All this should take is "Slaving" the destination unit to the SPDIF or AES input. The "Slave" unit will then use the Clock from the SPDIF or AES unit...

What exactly are you trying to sync up (how many units, what connections, and what do you want to be your master)?

I'm trying to sync my MOTU 24io with my RME ADI-2. The MOTU has a BNC word clock input. I'm assuming I'd need some kind of SPDIF/AES to word clock adapter... If something like that even exists.

OK, why would you need to sync the ADI-2 to the MOTU? What are you using the ADI-2 for then (what is it connected to)?

Are you just wanting to slave the MOTU to the ADI-2's wordclock to try and improve the sound of the MOTU's converters? If so, it is probably not worth the trouble, and the SPDIF-to-BNC WC adaptors/converters you would need will likely add jitter IMO.

I guess I'm confused on what you are doing - but I'm easily confused (I'm a drummer  ).

There's no adapter that converts AES or S/PDIF to Word Clock. They're entirely different signals, although the clock is embedded in the signal itself. There are some devices that have that capability, like Apogee's Big Ben and the old MOTU Digital Timepiece (and I believe UA's 2192 as well) but they're all fairly expensive. Your cheapest option may be to pick up a used 2408 interface and add it to the system as you can drive the clock from its S/PDIF input.
