I was asked by the guy I am working with to get:

---quote---
Kind of like Leonard Cohen on 'The Future' album, or 'I'm
your
Man". Or Nick Cave on 'Boatman's Call' or 'No More Shall We Part'.
THese
are not country recordings but their vocals are always close and big
sounding without being overly loud.

I am on my way out to pick up some recordings, but thought I would pose the question here to see if anyone had any direction or clues.

You are always limited by the source and the tools you have available to work with. If this guy doesn't have near the exact same voice and singing style as those he points out to you, you can't get there from here. He is also likely hearing a vocal chain that was recorded and mixed using very high quality expensive gear.

After picking up some albums and taking a listen it seems like the sound that he is after is a fairly dry sound that has been compressed.

I understand that source and chain are huge factors, but what happens from there, in terms of effects is what I am going to work on now for him.

Any fans of the Cohen/Cave sound feel free to throw me suggestions or ideas of what you have done in the past.

(These tunes are already recorded and we are just mixing now.)
