can anyone tell give me some tech tips about vocal recording. my vocals sound nice an clear but i still find them a little thin. i use a AKG c3000 mic and a Focusrite preamp. also can someone tell me if recording without h phones (out of phase) is really any good and what do i need to do to try this out.

You have just perfectly described the AKG C3000 mic. It is one of those mics that really needs the right preamp to help counter it's weakness. You don't say which Focusrite you are you using, but if it is not Red or Blue in color, all the others don't do that mic a real service.

I would suggest that you get to used to using heaphones when doing vocals so that you can more clearly hear and understand the tone of your own voice as well as how to interact as you sing into the mic to control things like dynamics, mouth noise, breathing and many other nuances of singing.
