The best sounding vocals possible starts with a great vocalist, great mic, great pre, and goes further down the line.

To get the best quality out of your personal gear start with thinking about mic placement and the room you will be singing in. Then move into gear upgrades. There is a forum in recording.org call The Vocal Booth. They'd be able to help you better as I'm just starting to scratch the surface.
