Soundtracs
can somebody help me with some info on old Soundtracs mixers. i cant find anything on them because they seem to be just digital desks now. the site has nothing on old gear.
I'm looking at a MR 32 channel desk. anybody know about these. what would be a fair price?

16 bit vs. . 24 bit, again - recording vocals sans compres
I've heard of a number producers on and offline who are recording vocals without adding compression until >after< the A/D conversion.
Mackie d8b vs. . Yamaha 02R96
I am new in the market for a digital mixing board and was just about to buy a Mackie d8b (because a good friend has one and loves it) and then I recently found out about the Yamaha 02R96. I'm wondering if anyone has opinions one way or the other about these boards to help me choose what is the best product and how reliable it is. Thanks very much.

I NEED info on: Midas XL42 preamp/eq
Got a chance to buy the Midas XL42 as well as a Klark Teknik DN504 4 ch compressor.
Anybody have any experience with either of these (especiall the Midas)?
What are they going for new and on the used market?
my window of opportunity for the Midas is short.
Appreciate any help.
Ciao for now,
Woods Palmer

Keeping stuff seperate in my mixes
...Up until now the main way I keep instruments seperate in my mixes is to use eq. I will cut certain frequencys out of some instuments and boost them in others. But i end up eqing everingthing, And my mixes begin to sound a litte unnatural. And i still dont get the seperation that i really want. What are the ways ya'll keep stuff seperate in ya'lls mixes. Different mics? different pres?

frequency analysis?
Since I learned that every instrument has its fundamental and harmonic place in the frequency spectrum my mixes are much CLEANER and each sound has its own little spot that it sits. The end result? I can hear everything no matter which system I playback on.

Drums: Compression or Gates?
Recording 3 piece live in barn.
4 mics on drums (kick, snare, 2 overhead) all subbed to two tracks ADAT.
IF I would like to try dynamics processing of some sort -- which is more common: compressing or gating? 4 or 2 channel as in 1 per mic or just kick and snare? Or perhaps process after subbed to two? process to tape or at mix?

My Computer.
Well, my computer is needed again! This time for the Apogee AES show booth to show off the Native Tools Bundle! For that I bit the bullet and bought a P4 2.0A Ghz processor to get some more jiuce out of it since I will be adding a TC Power Core card as well...so the system will include an RME 9652, UAD, TC Power Core and a FireWire card. of course no SCSI! ha ha ha ha ha ha!
