MXL 2003 on male vocals
I'm in the market for a used (ebay) recording condenser mic under $200 specifically for male vocals. I'm using http://www.studioau… to figure out which mic might be a good fit for me because none of the stores in my area have floor mics to test.

Vocal techniques
Hi. Just want to ask :
What effects do musicians such as Maynard James Keenan (TOOL) and singers like Chino Moreno (Deftones) and other bands with vocalists similar to these mentioned use.
Do these guys use effects like a guitar has pedals and effects applied to it.
What are the effects these guys use. or what are the effects do you use >

vocal maximizer
i've read in many forums that WavesL?-Maximizer is probably the most user friendly compressor/squasher/limiter for vocals
The L1 Maximizer is fairly cheap right now, whereas the L3 and whatever it's sequel is are not
has anyone used these to see if theres really much difference? the website descriptions have been rather unhelpful

Vocal Tracking: Compressor vs. Compressor
What is the logistical difference between side-chaining a compressor through an equalizer to compress only certain frequencies versus just applying a multiband compressor affecting the same frequencies? (for instance when tracking vocals)
This question arose from Dallan Beck's book The Musician's Guide to Recording Vocals

Live Vocal Rig Suggestions?
it looks as if i will be heading up vocals in a band that i am joining, so i would like to have my sound tailored to me, regardless of where we play. i would like to put together a small, quality rig (rack mount perhaps?) so that i can just give an XLR cable to the sound guy at a gig and tell him to run it my signal dry, and just EQ as needed.

Avenged Sevenfold vocals
I really like the vocals in Avenged Sevenfold. I would like to get that nice edgy smokers voice in some of my recordings. Is this just a smokers voice or do they use a lot of compression. I watched some of their clips on youtube and noticed that his voice in the video didn't sound as thick as it does in the recordings. Its like there somekind plugin that adds harmonics or something.
