I read the white sheet from dbx and well have no clue about what is said. Thats right I'm an old disk jockey and all this technical stuff is lost on me so forgive the stupid question(s).

anyone have any good tips on basic compression settings for hip hop vocals? what should the threshold, ratio, attack, and relase be set to?

It seems to me that upward expansion will yeild the exact same results as compression with a gain boost. Either way, the ratio between loud and quiet parts of the mix will end up the same, right? If I am wrong, can someone please explain the difference between these two?

What type of compressor do you think is better suited for compression of cymbals (crash-pang cymbals).

i received Cubase LE (lowest version of Cubase) with the Alesis Multitrack 8 track i purchased a couple months back. i have to say, i really prefer it over Cakewalk Home Studio 2002 (which i also own), but that's just my personal opinion.

I'm a professional musician, not an enginner, so maybe I'm missing something. I've been tracking vocals for a singer through a pretty good signal chain of Mojave Audio Mic/Focusrite ISA220/G5/Digital Performer.

Now that I have dropped my 1402 in favor of a pair of Bricks for preamps I have lost the ability to patch in a hardware compressor on the channel send of the mixer. Not necessarily a bad thing considering the only hardware compressor I have is a Alesis 3630.
